Advanced Corneal surgery at the Yonge Eglinton laser centre

Our surgeons are all corneal specialists, which means they are leaders in their field of corneal transplantation and corneal surgery. They help people with clouded corneas through their work at the the Toronto Western Hospital of the University Health Network and the Toronto East General Hospital.

In recent years there have been advances in corneal transplants, whereby only part of the cornea is replaced. These surgeons are on the forefront of these developments including DLEK (Deep Lamellar Endothelial Keratoplasty), DSAEK (Descemet”s Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty, and DALK (Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty). We are also proud to be the first and only center in Canada that can do Corneal transplants with the assistance of the IntraLase TM femtosecond laser (IntraLaser Enabled Keratoplasty, IEK). This revolutionary laser allows us to create a more precise, safe LASIK flap and as well can be used to help people with cloudy corneas recover their vision more quickly and with better results. This is truly cutting edge work that we are very excited to be involved with.

Intacs Corneal ring segments

Intacs are tiny rings made of plastic that are inserted into a narrow channel in the cornea created by the IntraLase. Originally developed for the treatment of near sightedness over 15 years ago, they have become useful in the treatment of Keratoconus. Keratoconus is a thinning problem with the cornea. Since the cornea is the major focusing lens of the eye, if it is thin and irregular, the image a person sees is distorted. When severe, corneal transplantation is done. Milder cases use contact lenses and glasses. Intacs TM corneal ring segments help to treat keratoconus by making the surface of the eye more regular and the vision clearer. The procedure is a short, painless outpatient procedure and many people with this condition can avoid a corneal transplant by undergoing this procedure.
Advanced Cataract Surgery

Nowadays, cataract surgery is a safe and effective method of restoring sight to millions of people. Usually, after removal of a cataract, a plastic intra-ocular lens is inserted in the place of the natural lens of the eye. This puts the eye back in focus and allows for good vision in the distance. Newer implants are now available. Ones corrected for minor aberrations of vision can give slightly sharper vision. Two of these are the Technis TM and Blue Blocker IQ lenses. Even more exciting is the development of lenses that provide for close up and distance vision. These are called multifocal or bifocal implants such as the ReZoom TM and Restor TM lenses. They free people from the need for bifocals or reading glasses for most tasks. Medical studies have shown that people with these lenses are free of glasses for up to 80% of their day. So for those people with cataracts that want to be spectacle-free with the chance to read and see far away without glasses, these types of lenses may be for you. Speak to your eye doctor to see if these lenses are good for you.
