Blepharitis is a chronic condition of the eyelids and oil producing glands surrounding the eyeball. These glands become infected with bacteria that normally reside on the skin. Once infected, the glands become swollen while the multiplying bacteria release irritants into the eye causing it to be red and sore. This is a long-term problem that cannot be totally irradicated, but can be controlled with regular lid hygiene and hot compresses.
This lid hygiene includes:
1. Hot compresses to eyelids at least for 5 min. - 10 min. at bedtime.
Use a clean washcloth and run it under hot water from the faucet.
Apply to the eyes and gently rub the lids in a massaging manner.
2. Use baby shampoo and dilute it with one part shampoo to
approximately 10 parts water. A commercial lid scrub like Blepharoshampoo (Ophthapharma Inc.) or Lid-Care Towelettes (CibaVision, Inc) work very well and are not irritating to the eye. A regular Q-tip is soaked in the cleanser and while looking in the mirror, the base of the eyelashes of both the upper and lower lids are gently scrubbed with a Q-tip soaked in this mixture.
3. Polysporin eye ointment or Polycidin, which is available at the
pharmacy without a prescription is then applied to the eyelashes. A small amount of the ointment is placed on your index finger and then gently rubbed on your eyelashes with the eyelids closed.
4. Depending upon the severity of your condition you may be instructed
to apply a drop in the eye a number of times during the day. Please follow the instructions on your prescription. Artificial tears during the day, about four times also gives comfort.
5. If your condition is severe or associated with facial acne, you may
be given a prescription for Tetracycline or Doxycycline capsules.
These should be taken four times a day or as per the instruction on the prescription.
Remember: You have a chronic, recurrent condition. This will undoubtedly flare up at times when you have not been diligent enough
with the treatment. During the initial phases you may require more
intensive treatment. Once the inflammation comes under control, however, you may be able to control the condition simply with regular cleansing of the eyelid margins with the lid shampoo mixture. The good news is, you have a treatable condition. With a small amount of regular effort, the inflammation can be controlled and your eyes will be less red and more comfortable.
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
