LASIK surgery is performed only after each of the eyes has been mapped, and the doctor has made a careful analysis of the health of the eyes, vision correction needed and the laser ablation, required.

In LASIK surgery, the patient is given a mild sedative, and is made to lie down. The doctor, then, positions the eye directly under the laser. The eyelids are kept open, using a kind of a retainer, which has a suction ring that keeps the eye pressurized. This is not uncomfortable, and is used to create the corneal flap. After the ultra-thin flap is created on the surface of the eye, laser energy is applied to reshape the eye. The flap is then replaced to serve as a type of natural bandage.

A computer is used to adjust the laser according to each person’s prescription. As the patient looks at a target light for a short time, the doctor watches the eye through a microscope while the laser sends pulses of light to the cornea. These light pulses reshape the cornea. . LASIK treatment varies from person to person and is customized.

LASIK treatment is painless, though some report mild discomforts .The patient is awake through out the surgery schedule. Though one can return home immediately after the surgery, a short rest is recommended.
