LASIK is among the great medical innovations of the past two decades. It has effectively helped millions of people bid farewell to their eyeglasses and contact lenses and to see the world around them more clearly than ever before. While conventional LASIK has a remarkable record of safety and success, it also has limitations. LASIK is highly effective at treating such common visual errors as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism; however, it cannot treat higher order aberrations. Simply stated, higher order aberrations are those often minute flaws in the shape of the cornea that do not follow any predictable pattern and are unique to each individual eye. While patients undergo LASIK to eliminate their need for eyeglasses and contact lenses, some patients still require visual aids after their surgery. This is usually a result of higher order aberrations.
Fortunately, at our Toronto laser vision correction centre, LASIK can be customised to address these higher order aberrations, leading to more precise correction of corneal flaws and a much higher chance of achieving excellent unaided vision. Through custom LASIK you, too, can find independence from eyeglasses and contact lenses.
Conventional vs. Custom LASIK
While there are many benefits of custom LASIK, conventional LASIK is still an effective treatment option for laser vision correction. Conventional LASIK can greatly improve the vision of patients with myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism and reduce the need for eyeglasses and contact lenses. For our Toronto patients with higher order aberrations, custom LASIK may be a more suitable treatment option.
How We Can Customize Your LASIK Treatment
At our ophthalmology practice in Toronto, custom LASIK begins with the creation of a highly detailed map of the patients eyes. This map uses wavefront technology to capture even the most difficult-to-detect flaws in the shape of the cornea, flaws that conventional LASIK would simply not be able to correct. These flaws, as well as the more overarching visual errors corrected by conventional LASIK, can all be addressed through custom LASIK. Once this intricate map of the eyes has been created, the data is fed into the computer that controls the excimer laser used to perform the LASIK surgery. This laser alters the shape of the cornea with exceptional precision, effectively eliminating the imperfections responsible for visual errors.
Advantages of Custom LASIK
In addressing higher order aberrations, custom LASIK not only results in sharper, clearer unaided vision, but it also minimises the risks associated with LASIK surgery. These risks include haloed vision, glare, and difficulty seeing at night. Patients who undergo custom LASIK have a greater chance of achieving 20/20 vision or better than with conventional LASIK. Custom LASIK patients also have a reduced chance of losing best-corrected vision. Patients who have lost best-corrected vision from past refractive surgeries such as LASIK or PRK may be helped by custom LASIK.
