Presbyopia is the gradual loss of the eyes’ ability to change their focus to see near objects clearly. It is extremely common and is the result of aging. As we age, the natural lens of the eye begins to thicken. This causes the lens to become less flexible. As a result of this thickening, the lens of the eye becomes harder. Because of the hardening and loss of flexibility that occurs within the lens, close-up focusing becomes difficult. Beginning around the age of 40, many patients begin to experience the symptoms of presbyopia.
Presbyopia Symptoms and Causes
The first symptoms experienced by many men and women are headaches when doing close work, blurry vision when reading or when sitting at the computer, and having to hold reading material at arm’s length.
As stated above, presbyopia is caused by the natural aging process. Because it is a result of aging, it is not possible to prevent presbyopia. Fortunately for those who suffer from presbyopia, however, there are many effective treatments available today.
Treatment of Presbyopia
Toronto presbyopia treatments include corrective eyewear, laser vision correction, and multifocal lenses. Your unique needs will determine which treatment option is included in your customized treatment plan.
Corrective eyewear: During the beginning stages of presbyopia some patients may require only the use of reading glasses. Reading glasses can be found at most stores and do not require a prescription. Other patients will need eyeglasses with bifocals or progressive addition lenses in the correction of presbyopia. Toronto patients who do not desire to wear eyeglasses may choose multifocal contact lenses instead. For our patients who choose corrective eyewear, there is an abundance of styles available today. You can correct your vision while still remaining stylish.
Laser vision correction: For patients who do not want to wear corrective eyewear in Toronto, laser vision correction may be a suitable treatment option. For such patients, monovision LASIK is available. During monovision LASIK, one eye is corrected for distance while the other is corrected for near vision. Many patients are able to eliminate their need for reading glasses, eyeglasses, and contact lenses after undergoing monovision LASIK. While monovision LASIK is quite effective at treating presbyopia, it is not a suitable treatment option for every patient. Some patients may find it difficult to adjust to monovision LASIK. To ensure an optimal outcome, patients may first try monovision using contact lenses before permanently changing their eyes. As with any surgery, there are risks. Poorer vision quality as well as a decrease in depth perception are two possible side-effects of monovision LASIK. These side-effects are most noticeable during levels of low light. For many patients, the benefits of monovision LASIK outweigh the risks.
Multifocal lenses: Another treatment of presbyopia that eliminates the need for corrective eyewear is the placement of a multifocal lens. In Toronto, multifocal lenses replace the natural lens of the eye and allow the patient to focus on multiple distances. Through multifocal lenses we can correct both near and distance vision.
