The KAMRA™ Inlay is an implantable device that can correct presbyopia, greatly improving your ability to see near objects such as text.A woman reads a book while lying in a hammock.

As we age, our near vision deteriorates. This condition is known as presbyopia, and it affects all of us at one point or another in our lives. Common solutions for presbyopia include reading glasses and multi-focal contact lenses (or monovision lenses). However, both options are less than convenient; in order to take advantage of the benefits they offer, you must carry your glasses or wear your contact lenses at all times, and you must ensure that they are well maintained and cleaned constantly. With LASIK surgery, you can correct presbyopia, but at the expense of your distance vision, as laser vision correction can only modify the cornea for near or far field of vision, not both in the same eye. The KAMRA™ Inlay (pronounced like "camera") corrects presbyopia and can be used alone or in conjunction with LASIK treatment.

The KAMRA™ Inlay - What Is It?

Put simply, the KAMRA™ is an implantable lens that's placed inside the cornea (beneath the corneal flap or through a corneal pocket) to help focus light onto the retina for near vision. Smaller than a contact lens and weighing less than a single grain of rice, it is completely imperceptible once it has been placed - besides the amazing vision that it provides, of course. The inlay itself is a small, round micro-disc with an opaque outer ring and a transparent opening in the center. Through this opening, light is refracted onto the retina in an extremely focused fashion, for improved vision clarity.

Nearsighted and farsighted people and those with astigmatism can benefit greatly from the KAMRA™ Inlay, as it provides a permanent solution to presbyopia and eliminates the downsides posed by glasses and contact lenses or monovision. If you suffer poor distance vision, the KAMRA™ Inlay can be combined with LASIK treatment to correct for both near and far vision. Once your LASIK procedure is complete, the disc will be placed over the cornea and the flap will be put back into place, where it will heal naturally. In either case, the procedure can typically be completed in less than 30 minutes, and vision improvement will be noticeable soon afterward.

After more than 10 years of research and development, the completion of clinical trials throughout Europe and Asia, and the placement of over 15,000 inlays, the KAMRA™ Inlay has received clinical approval in Canada. This extensive testing period has shown the inlay to be a safe and effective solution for presbyopia, and it is a tremendous option for individuals looking to treat this common ailment.
