Enhance Your Vision with the ReSTOR® Lens

Middle aged couple on sight seeing boat tripDuring cataract surgery, an intraocular lens (IOL) - a tiny silicone or plastic lens - is implanted to replace the natural lens of the eye, which has become clouded. A range of IOLs are available on the market, each with distinct advantages. Alcon Surgical's AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® lens, available at our Toronto practice, is a multifocal lens that features specialized technology allowing patients to reduce their dependency on glasses after surgery. During a consultation, TLC surgeons can discuss the benefits of multifocal IOLs with you, and determine which type of IOL is best suited to your needs. Schedule an appointment with us today to learn more about the ReSTOR® lens.

Choosing an IOL

During cataract surgery, your natural lens will be gently broken up and suctioned out of your eye. It will be replaced with an IOL. These lenses mimic the way a natural lens refracts light to help us see clearly. IOLs are very small, roughly 5-6 mm across, and our practice prefers foldable lenses, which can be placed in the eye using only a tiny incision.

Before your procedure, you will discuss the various types of IOLs with your doctor. Monofocal IOLs correct vision at one distance only - either far away, immediate, or close up. This type of IOL is fairly basic, and is typically covered by insurance. Although monofocal IOLs offer some degree of permanent vision correction, patients who receive them will still depend on corrective eye wear to be able to see clearly at multiple distances. Most monofocal IOL patients choose a lens that corrects farsightedness, so they may still find themselves reaching for glasses or bifocals to read a menu or their phone.

Multifocal IOLs are a type of premium lens, and offer vision correction for your entire range of vision. If you receive a multifocal IOL, you can expect to see clearly near, immediate, and far, with little to no need for corrective eyewear. Although multifocal lenses are not typically covered by insurance, they can provide a vast improvement in your quality of life. The ReSTOR® lens is a safe, effective multifocal lens that has been used to improve the lives of nearly 100,000 cataract surgery patients.

Benefits of the ReSTOR® Lens

In addition to correcting vision at a range of distances, the ReSTOR® lens offers a number of benefits, including:

  • No alteration of natural colors
  • Consistent quality of vision in any light
  • A slight yellow tint that filters out short-wavelength blue light that may damage the retina over time

We understand that each of our patients' treatment goals, health conditions, and budgets are unique. We will work closely with you to discuss the risks and benefits of each of the treatment options available to you.
