Corneal Transplants with IEK
The corneal specialist surgeons at Yonge Eglinton Laser Eye + Cosmetic Centre are proud to offer technologically advanced corneal transplant surgery. Through the transplantation of one or both corneas, people with serious eye disorders can regain their vision in a faster, safer, more effective manner. IntraLase® Enabled Keratoplasty, or IEK, which is offered at our Toronto, Ontario practice, is an exciting new procedure that makes exceptional results more accessible than ever.
The IEK procedure is set apart from conventional corneal transplant surgery by the use of the IntraLase® excimer laser. The corneas are extracted from the donor using this precise laser. The eyes of the recipient are also prepared in a similar way by the IntraLase® laser. After the corneas have been extracted and the recipient adequately prepared, the donor corneas are transplanted into the patient's eyes.
Because both the donor and the recipient are prepared in similar fashions with the precise IntraLase® laser, the donor corneas fit almost perfectly into the recipient's eye. The higher accuracy of the fitting lowers the chances of astigmatism resulting and increases the chances of quicker recovery.
This development puts Yonge Eglinton Laser Centre on the forefront of science and medicine and allows us to help patients recover their sight more quickly. We are the first and only Canadian site with this exciting new development and are very proud of it!
Corneal Transplants with DSEK
Corneal transplants are performed to replace a damaged or diseased cornea with healthy, donated corneal tissue. This can be done with a procedure called deep lamellar endothelial keratoplasty (DLEK), and now a variation of it called Decemet’s stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK). Dr. Rootman was the first surgeon in Toronto, Ontario to perform these procedures and has established a reputation as one of the most known and trusted ophthalmic surgeons in the area.
Unlike penetrating keratoplasty (PK), the previous standard in corneal transplants, DSEK is a specialized form of corneal transplant that replaces a smaller piece of the cornea and requires a shorter recovery period. Using a special device called a microkeratome, a thin donor wafer of tissue is created. An incision is made to remove the damaged section of the patient’s cornea and the healthy tissue is placed into the patient's eye. Due to the small size of the incision made during the DLEK and DSEK procedures, it heals without the need for many sutures, lessening the recovery time. The DSEK procedure also carries other advantages over traditional cornea transplant surgeries, including:
- Less astigmatism is created since there are no sutures.
- The eye is much stronger and more resistant to injury since only the diseased tissue rather than the entire cornea is replaced.
- Surgery time is quicker.
- The chance of rejection is reduced significantly.
- The procedure can be combined with cataract surgery.
