As Medical Director of the Yonge Eglinton Laser Eye Centre, Dr. David Rootman has extensive qualifications that put him within an elite circle comprising the top corneal specialist surgeons in Canada. His exceedingly distinguished career in Ophthalmology began at the University of Toronto. As a resident and physician, Dr. Rootman was identified as an outstanding prospect for the University of Toronto teaching staff and was sent for two additional years of training at the Louisiana State University. Under the direction of world famous Drs. Kaufman and McDonald, Dr. Rootman had the opportunity to study with true pioneers and leaders of refractive surgery. Louisiana State University was the first North American Institution to perform laser refractive surgery.
Since returning to practice in Toronto in 1988, Dr. Rootman has been a board member of the Cornea Society (until 2008) and on staff at the University Health Network and the Hospital for Sick Children. At the Toronto Western Hospital, he performs over 150 cornea transplants annually and deals with only the most complex surgical problems. He was the first Canadian surgeon to perform Deep Lamellar Endothelial Keratoplasty (DLEK), Femtosecond laser Enabled Keratoplasty (IEK) and Femtosecond laser Enabled Astigmatic Keratotomy (IEAK). In addition, he was the first Ontario surgeon to perform Intracorneal ring segment for Keratoconus. Also an expert in corneal conditions affecting children, Dr. Rootman is pleased to have restored vision in children from across Canada and around the world at Sick Kids. He finds this to be one of the most rewarding aspects of his well-rounded practice.
As an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, Dr. Rootman has made significant contributions to the education of ophthalmologists from across Canada and around the world. A true leader in his field, Dr. Rootman has trained corneal specialist surgeons from over 10 different countries, is the author of over 100 research papers and has lectured throughout the world on all topics related to his subspecialty. Dr. Rootman also served as Medical Director of the Eye Bank of Canada for over 12 years.
Refractive surgery is a major part of Dr. Rootman’s practice, and has been for over a decade. He has taken a leading role in the specialty, both through the education of other surgeons and through the advancement of his practice. Dr. Slomovic has made refractive surgery an emphasis in his practice for over 15 years. During that time, he has gained extensive experience first in RK and later in both PRK and LASIK. He is known especially for his kind, warm manner and reassuring demeanor when dealing with patients. His strong desire for excellence makes him fit in perfectly with the mission and goals of the center, where patient care comes first.
To meet the challenges of practice, Dr. Slomovic brings over two decades of study and experience. Originally trained as a clinical psychologist, Dr. Slomovic decided to pursue a medical career and subsequently received his M.D. from Memorial University in Newfoundland. He then went to Montreal for his internship and to the New York
University School of Medicine for a residency in Ophthalmology. Dr. Slomovic chose ophthalmology as a specialty because "It is such a clean, precise and rewarding occupation." He also appreciates the rapid improvement in vision enjoyed by most patients after surgery.
Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Slomovic decided to pursue more intensive studies into the cornea (the clear window at the front of the eye). He was accepted as a Clinical Fellow in Cornea and External Ocular Disease at the internationally regarded Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami. He then completed a second fellowship at Bascom Palmer - this one in Ophthalmic Laser Microsurgery. Dr. Slomovic enjoys corneal surgery because "this is the area of the eye where surgeries produce the highest rates of success."
Moving to Toronto after his fellowships, Dr. Slomovic is a faculty member at the University of Toronto where he was Director of Residency training, in charge of training Canadian Ophthalmologists. He also serves as Clinical Director of the Cornea Unit at the University Health Network. He is committed to thorough ophthalmic research, principally into corneal issues, and has published numerous articles in international professional journals. He has also presented at ophthalmology conferences worldwide and is the President of the Canadian Cornea and External Disease Society.
When he is taking a break from his professional responsibilities, Dr. Slomovic enjoys spending time with his wife, Rhona, and their daughters, Alana and Jaclyn. Dr. Slomovic also enjoys outdoor activities such as bicycling, walking, hiking and skiing.

A distinguished leader in the field of laser vision correction, Dr. Rabinovitch brings two decades of experience performing laser eye surgery to the Yonge Eglinton Laser Eye + Cosmetic Center.
His celebrated career as a Laser Refractive Surgeon began at McGill University, where he earned his medical degree with a specialization in Ophthalmology. Subsequently, he completed a two year postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California's world-renowned Francis I. Proctor Foundation in corneal surgery and ocular inflammatory diseases.
A pioneer in the industry, Dr. Rabinovitch gained extensive experience with earlier procedures in excimer laser surgery when it was first introduced to Toronto in the late 1980’s. He then continued on to be senior laser surgeon at the Herzig Eye Institute where he performed thousands of laser procedures for over a decade. During that time, Dr. Rabinovitch earned an outstanding reputation for both clinical and surgical excellence.
His wide-ranging medical and surgical accomplishments have earned him a reputation as a preeminent authority in the specialty of cornea and refractive surgery and intraocular inflammation. He was chief investigator for the FDA for a novel anterior chamber intraocular lens for highly myopic patients and also for an investigational intraocular slow-release device for patients with more serious forms of intraocular inflammation. Committed to the growth and continual improvement of his field, Dr. Rabinovitch has played an active role in the medical community for years. As Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at University of Toronto, he has taught residents and performed research and lectured all over North America. He served as President of the York Finch Hospital Medical staff and since co-founding the Toronto Ophthalmological Society in 1991, has continuously served as its Chairman. He is currently the Chief of Ophthalmology at the Humber River Regional Hospital and sits on many advisory panels for Regionalization of Ophthalmic Surgical Services in Central Ontario. Finally, Dr. Rabinovitch is a diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Dr. Clara Chan is a specialist in laser vision correction, corneal and cataract surgery. She attended Stanford University in California for her undergraduate studies and received her medical degree from Queen’s University, School of Medicine, Canada. During her ophthalmology residency at the University of Toronto, her surgical expertise was recognized with awards for exceptional performance in cataract surgery by Mount Sinai Hospital and the Kensington Eye Institute. She was also acknowledged by awards for clinical excellence from St. Michael’s Hospital and the Hospital for Sick Children. The CNIB recognized Dr. Chan as one of the top five ophthalmology residents in Canada and awarded her the E. A. Baker Scholarship to pursue post-doctoral fellowship studies.
Dr. Chan was selected among ophthalmologists across the world for a prestigious surgical fellowship in refractive surgery and corneal transplantation at the Cincinnati Eye Institute. Dr. Chan has extensive experience in the latest refractive surgery techniques and the most advanced treatments for Keratoconus including Intacs and femtosecond laser corneal surgery.
Dr. Chan is a faculty member of the University of Toronto and serves as the Assistant Director of Surgical Teaching for the Department of Ophthalmology. She is on staff at St. Michael’s Hospital and the Toronto Western Hospital where she trains cornea specialist surgeons from around the world to manage the most complicated cases and to perform the most challenging surgeries. She has served as a volunteer providing surgical care to underprivileged patients in the Philippines as part of the St. Michael’s Hospital Urban Angels annual mission.
Dr. Chan has published widely in the ophthalmic literature and has presented and taught courses to ophthalmologists at major national and international meetings. She is also active with the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and serves on the EyeWorld Editorial Board.

Dr. Kravetz graduated from the University of Toronto Medical School in 1974. Initially, he completed the Family Practice residency and then went on to complete the specialty program in Medical and Surgical Ophthalmology, also at the University of Toronto. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Dr. Kravetz has served as president of both the Section on Ophthalmology and the Association of Ontario Ophthalmologists. He has also served as the Divisional Chief of Ophthalmology at the Etobicoke General Hospital, where he has operated a successful comprehensive Ophthalmology practice for nearly 30 years. Emphasizing Refractive as well as Cataract and Anterior Segment Microsurgery, Dr. Kravetz has developed a true passion for restoring sight.
Dr. Kravetz began performing refractive surgery even before the laser became standard. Then, approximately 20 years ago, he had the opportunity to work in one of Toronto’s first established laser eye centres, the Toronto Laser Sight Centre. He has been performing refractive surgery since the procedure began to become popular and has thus had the opportunity to witness and experience firsthand several technological advances throughout the years. Presently, Dr. Kravetz finds himself more confident in the procedure than ever before.
Since his experience at the Toronto Laser Sight Centre, Dr. Kravetz has been affiliated with, and operated out of, several laser centres within the GTA and has become familiar with their various platforms. Today, he is very pleased to be part of the Yonge Eglinton Laser Eye Centre team, where he has access to the finest and most up-to-date technology available. Highly respected by his colleagues, he also finds his passion for restoring sight aligned with that of Drs. Rootman, Slomovic and Singal.
On a personal level, Dr. Kravetz is an avid photographer. He also enjoys water sports and spending time at his cottage up north. He is a warm, caring individual who is consistently able to develop a strong rapport with his patients. He is also a highly cautious, meticulous and excellent surgeon who understands that your vision is invaluable. Born and raised in Toronto, Dr. Skouras is very proud to practice Ophthalmology in this wonderful city. He completed his medical and ophthalmology training at the University of Toronto where he was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society – a national honour society that recognizes high-class standings for medical students, residents, scientists and physicians in Canada and the United States. Dr. Skouras then went on to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and also became a Diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology.
For over a decade, Dr. Skouras has made refractive surgery a focus of his general ophthalmology practice and has worked with many of the lasers widely used today. Dr. Skouras has a passion for helping people restore their sight through laser vision correction. He is a dedicated surgeon who truly cares about his patients’ outcomes. Dr. Kraft has been in practice as an ophthalmologist since 1984. A graduate of the University of Toronto Medical School in 1978, he completed his ophthalmology residency in Toronto in 1982.
Dr. Kraft specializes in the field of strabismus, which includes problems of eye movements and alignment (“crossed eyes”) and amblyopia (“lazy eyes”) both in adults and children. In addition, he is an expert in the use of Botox TM, having used it in his practice since January, 1985. At first he treated patients affected by strabismus, and those with facial dystonia and blepharospasm, disabling neurologic diseases that cause uncontrolled blinking and eyelid closure. Over the past few years he has broadened his Botox TM practice to include the cosmetic treatment of people with prominent facial wrinkles, brow furrows, forehead lines, crows' feet, and prominent neck cords. A staff surgeon at the Toronto Western Hospital, part of the University Health Network, and The Hospital for Sick Children, Dr. Kraft is currently a professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences at the University of Toronto. He has trained medical students, interns, resident physicians, fellows and visiting physicians from all over the world. Dr. Kraft has received numerous awards for his surgical and clinical teaching of residents and medical students. In addition, he has received long-term achievement awards for continuing education from major ophthalmology organizations.
In January, 2003, Dr. Kraft joined the Yonge Eglinton Laser Cosmetic Centre to provide cosmetic Botox TM treatments to clients who wish to "smooth away the years" and clients who wish to reduce problem underarm perspiration.
