LASIK and PRK are often recommended to patients whose vision is affected by astigmatism. When patients are not ideal candidates for either procedure, however, the physician may recommend the implantation of a toric intraocular lens (IOL). These implantable lenses are designed specifically to correct astigmatic vision and come in a full range of powers. During a personal consultation with one of our surgeons, we can determine whether implantation of a toric intraocular lens at our Toronto, Ontario practice is right for you.
An increasing number of people are electing to undergo eye surgery, and the implantation of an intraocular lens for the treatment of cataracts is the most commonly performed eye surgery in the United States. In cataract patients who also suffer from astigmatism, a toric intraocular lens can be used to replace the existing clouded crystalline lens of the eye. The implantation of the toric intraocular lens is performed under local anesthesia at our Laser Eye + Cosmetic Centre. Yonge Eglinton only uses flexible IOLs, which allows the lens to be folded during insertion, thus reducing the size of the incision and eliminating the need for stitches. The entire procedure usually takes about a half hour, with complete recovery taking two to three weeks. During recovery, it is important that patients relax and avoid strenuous activity that may impede the recovery process.
For cataract patients who suffer from astigmatism and are unable to undergo LASIK or PRK, there is still hope in the form of toric intraocular lenses. Toric IOLs allow patients to achieve vision correction previously unattainable for individuals with their condition. If you have cataracts and have also been diagnosed with astigmatism, it may be time to consider implantation of a toric intraocular lens at the Toronto practice of Yonge Eglinton Laser Eye + Cosmetic Centre. Please contact us today to schedule your personal consultation to discuss intraocular lenses.
