Our practice also offers Implantable Contact Lenses (ICLs) to treat severe nearsightedness andfarsightedness without the use of a laser. Implantable contact lenses are similar to the intraocular lenses (IOLs) used in cataract
surgery. However, unlike lenses used in cataract surgery, implantable lenses are placed in eyes that retain their natural lenses.
To place an implantable contact lens, the surgeon at our Toronto practice places drops and a local anesthetic into the eye. Next, the surgeon makes a small incision and inserts the implantable lens into the eye. The entire procedure lasts between 15 and 30 minutes and vision returns very quickly.
This procedure can be used as an alternative for patients who are not good candidates for laser vision correction. It is completely reversible - implants can be removed at any time if necessary.
