How to Prepare Before PRK Surgery
Are you tired of depending on your glasses or contact lenses for everyday activities? PRK surgery, or Photorefractive keratectomy, is an advanced ophthalmologic procedure that reshapes the surface of the cornea by using an excimer laser. PRK can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. PRK surgery can dramatically enhance your vision, and you can expect to notice results in just one day. This treatment often results in improved confidence and a better outlook on life.
One of our doctors can conduct an in-depth eye examination to determine the quality of your vision, and will give instructions as to what you should do before PRK surgery at our Waterloo, Mississauga, London, or Toronto, Ontario, offices. You can expect to follow a specific set of instructions to ensure your PRK surgery provides the maximum benefits. Diligently following your doctors instructions is the best way to provide a stress and worry-free experience.
Preparing for Your PRK Surgery
In the weeks before your PRK surgery, you will need to begin preparing for your procedure. If you wear contacts, you will need to stop wearing the lenses to allow your corneas to stabilize. Patients with soft lenses will typically have to switch to glasses for two weeks before surgery. For patients who wear rigid contacts, it will take longer for the cornea to stabilize, often up to three or four weeks.
You will also need to find someone who can drive you home after the procedure as you may be prescribed an anti-anxiety medication to relax before and after your surgery. In addition, while your eyesight will be better immediately following your procedure, you will still need to wear protective eyewear that can impede your vision while driving. You may also want someone to help you around the house for the first day of your recovery.
Day of Procedure
Wear comfortable clothing for your procedure. It is important not to wear bulky items in the event you need to remove it during or after surgery, as this may cause you to bump your eye. Wash your face thoroughly before you leave home, and remove any makeup or skin cream. Do not wear any perfume, cologne, hairspray, or aerosol deodorant. The laser machine senses chemicals in the air and any unnecessary airborne particles may disrupt its function.
