“I have always enjoyed working with my hands, especially on small precise projects”, answers Dr. Rootman when asked why he chose Ophthalmology as a specialty. “The symmetry of the cornea was very appealing”, this led to his choice as Cornea and Refractive surgery as a sub-specialty and interest. As a resident physician, Dr. Rootman was identified as an outstanding prospect for the University of Toronto teaching staff and was sent for two years additional training at the Louisiana State University under the direction of Drs. Kaufman and McDonald. This site was the first North American institution to perform laser refractive surgery.
Since returning to practice in Toronto in 1988, Dr. Rootman has been on active staff at the University Health Network where he is part of the Cornea Service there. Yearly, he performs over a hundred and fifty corneal transplants and deals with only the most complex surgical problems. He is also on staff at the Hospital for Sick Children, where he is an expert in corneal conditions affecting children and has operated on children from across Canada and around the world. He has trained Corneal surgeons from Canada, the US, the UK, the Phillipines, Israel, India, Malaysia, Australia and Singapore. “I am especially proud of my contribution to the education of Corneal Specialists from around the world, this has been a very enriching experience for me”.
Refractive surgery has been a part of his practice since 1998 and he has performed thousands of PRK and LASIK procedures during that time. Being able to participate in this aspect of eye care, reducing the dependence on eye glasses and contacts has added a new dimension to my practice.” Dr. Rootman was so convinced of the safety and efficacy of Laser Vision Correction, that he, his wife and son underwent Laser Vision Surgery themselves over 8 years ago. "It has changed my life too; I can work, cycle and ski without interference from fogged up lenses. I feel so much more comfortable offering the surgery to my patients knowing that I and my family have gone through it."
When not practicing medicine, Dr. Rootman enjoys his computers. He has developed his own data base program for recording electronic medical records which he employs at the Yonge Eglinton Laser Eye centre and his office at the University Health Network. He also enjoys reading and is an avid cyclist, both on and off-road. He is married with four children, a dog and a turtle who provide him with the balance to a very busy schedule. |
