For patients who may not be suitable candidates for LASIK or PRK, alternatives are available at our Toronto, Ontario laser eye center.
There are those patients that may not be candidates for laser refractive surgery. Either their correction is too high, or it's just not advisable to do surgery on them with the laser. We have other options available such as an interocular lens that can be inserted into the eye to correct for very, very high degrees of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. As well, we're now offering what are called Intacs. These are tiny little segments of plastic that we can insert into the cornea. These are not for the average person, though they were developed to treat low degrees of nearsightedness. We have discovered over the years that these segments are actually very good for people that have unusual corneas such as keratoconus, where the cornea is irregular. We can then insert these ring segments into the cornea in order to help smooth out the cornea and improve their vision.
