The surgeons at Yonge Eglinton Laser Eye Centre provide personalized care through every step of LASIK (laser assisted in situ keratomileusis) surgery, from your initial consultation to your complete recovery. Patient education is one of our top priorities, and we will take all the time needed to explain your aftercare instructions to avoid post-surgical complications. Following surgery, we will schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your recovery. To learn more about LASIK aftercare, contact our practice in Toronto, ON.
About LASIK Surgery
In order to understand LASIK aftercare, it is important to know what takes place during surgery. LASIK is an advanced laser eye surgery that can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Our skilled eye surgeons offer custom LASIK that is completely blade-free. This approach is the safest, most advanced form of the procedure. A femtosecond laser is used to create a flap in the outermost layer (epithelium) of the cornea. Next, an excimer laser is used to permanently reshape the center layer of the cornea (stroma) to improve focus.
After surgery, LASIK patients are allowed to return home with the help of a friend or loved one. Patients typically recover within 24 to 48 hours.
LASIK patients are instructed to rest comfortably and relax the first day. By the second day, patients can usually return to work and resume other day-to-day activities. Postoperative care is an important part of your healing process and the success of the procedure. Following our detailed instructions is the surest way to prevent complications such as infection.
We will ask that you wear protective eye shields or goggles for 24 hours after surgery. After that time, you should wear the eye shields during sleep for the next four days. Eye shields should initially be removed only to administer the prescribed eye drop medication. It is important to avoid touching your eyes or allowing dust or debris to contact the eyes during this time. This will allow the corneal flap to heal properly.
Your eyes will feel dry after the surgery, but this is usually temporary, and your prescribed eye drops will help keep them moist. This medication, which also prevents infection and inflammation, is the only eye drop you should use.
