ICL Recovery: What to Expect
If you are considering an implantable contact lens (ICL) at TLC Yonge Eglinton Laser Eye Centers®, you may be concerned about the healing process. Fortunately, ICL recovery is generally quick and easy, especially with the experienced care you will receive at our Toronto, ON, area practice. Our surgeons will use advanced technology, as well as their own clinical skill, to perform a precise procedure with minimal impact on your eye. Your vision may be a bit blurry following surgery, and you may experience some minor discomfort. However, we can provide eye drops to ease inflammation, and it should fade within a few days. It is also important that you attend follow-up appointments, so we can properly monitor your progress and healing.
We will provide prescription eye drops, which will reduce irritation and help to prevent infection.
Your Initial ICL Recovery
Thanks to the minimally invasive nature of the surgery, ICL recovery generally involves very little stress. At first, your eye might feel slightly inflamed, dry, and itchy. It may be a bit red, and your vision may be slightly blurry. These relatively minor side effects will usually fade within 24 hours but it can take up to two weeks for your vision to fully stabilize.

We will provide prescription eye drops, which will reduce irritation and help to prevent infection. You can also take non-prescription oral medications to reduce any discomfort. In most cases, you will need to wear a protective shield over your eye for a few days, including while you sleep. This will encourage better healing and keep you from accidentally rubbing your eye.
The day after your surgery, you will come back in for a follow-up. That way, your doctor can make sure that you are healing properly. He or she can also check for any complications, although serious side effects are extremely rare. You should find a ride home from your surgery and to your follow-up. At this second appointment, your doctor may give you clearance to drive.
Immediate Improvements and Long-Term Results
As soon as the initial blurriness fades, you should notice an improvement in your vision. In fact, like many patients, you may see a dramatic change within a few days. Your vision will continue to improve over the next week. In some cases, however, your eyesight could fluctuate for about a month.
In most cases, the results of ICL surgery are permanent. Occasionally, your prescription could change as you age, and you would require a second surgery to replace the original lens. Fortunately, this is rare. Like most patients, you will typically enjoy dramatically improved vision for the rest of your life. In fact, there is a high probability that you will enjoy 20/20 vision without glasses or contacts.
